Alternatives To The iPhone

Posted in: Cellphones |

The Apple iPhone since its introduction has raised the bar in the cellphone industry, specifically the smart phone category.  There have been many manufacturers scrambling to design a competing product in the recent year.  Below, I have listed five alternatives to the iPhone which you should look at before making your next cellphone purchase.

Samsung Instinct

Samsung Instinct
This device offers the features people have come to expect from a top notch phone, including a web browser, 3G, email, a GPS receiver, music and a video player.  The Instinct is based around a 3.1", 240×432 touch screen.  This includes tactile feedback, which allows the virtual QWERTY keypad to feel a little more like a real one.

Blackberry Curve

RIM Blackberry Curve
The Curve shines for consumers and businessmen who need the best in emailing abilities.   Their support is unparalleled in the industry.  Blackberry has outdone themselves with a design that is elegant, attractive and extremely functional.  This phone also includes a digital camera, and music and video playback.

HTC Touch

HTC Touch
The Touch is running on Windows Mobile 6 and is a touch screen phone with a 2.8" screen.  It groups menu items into categories named tools, entertainment and contacts.  The menus are placed on an interactive cube.  Swipe your finger left or right to rotate the cube.   Standard features include 3G Internet access, a 2 megapixel camera and the ability to take videos.

LG Voyager

LG Voyager
The Voyager sports a touch screen on the outside, and flips open clamshell-style to reveal a screen and a full keyboard on the inside.  You can record voice memos, set alarms, calculate tips, snap 2 megapixel photos, and use its integrated GPS when you get lost.

Nokia N95

Nokia N95
The N95 or multimedia computer as Nokia calls it, is thick and hefty, but packs a solid punch.  This machine features a 2.6" screen and it has a microSD expansion slot for storing content.  The N95 isn’t a touch screen phone.   It uses a two-way slider.  Slide the screen up to access the numeric keypad or slide it down to reveal the multimedia controls.  A 5 megapixel digital camera is also included.

It is notable to mention that there are several other alternatives to the iPhone I haven’t described above like the Helio Ocean and the Samsung F700.  In addition to an exciting Google Android phone.  I would recommend testing and trying out each one of the phones before dropping your money on the table.  Each smart phone has its advantages and disadvantages.  It’s up to you to decide what fits you best.

It seems like standard cellphones are a dying breed, as people navigate towards smart phones with more flexibility and features.  There is no doubt Apple has started a frenzy in this market, and in the past year the iPhone alternatives have been astounding.  It seems like the future is, that everyone will be carrying these mini computers in their pocket or purse.
