Avoid Getting Viruses With These 10 Tips

Viruses, spyware, adware, malware, trojans and dialers all can cause complete havoc on your Windows PC.  The amount of harm can vary from annoying pop-ups to devastating data loss, or possibly even total corruption of the Windows OS.

The ten tips below in no way guarantee that you will be virus-free, but will help teach you safe computing practices that could minimize your chances of getting infected.

  1. Install a popular well known Antivirus application and keep it running at all times with automatic updates turned on.
  2. Install a popular well known Spyware/Adware application and keep it running at all times with automatic updates turned on.
  3. Make sure Windows Automatic Updates are enabled and downloaded/installed as soon as they are available.
  4. DO NOT click on email attachments unless you are expecting a document or file.
  5. DO NOT click on links in email ever.
  6. Use a Router even if you have only one computer.
  7. DO NOT visit pornography, crack and warez websites.
  8. DO NOT use file sharing applications.
  9. DO NOT click on pop-ups while surfing the web.
  10. DO NOT download software and files from unknown websites.

Certain ISP’s (Internet Service Providers) have more customers and traffic than others.  I found that these worldwide statistics are rather interesting.

Actual figures and data are provided by Global Market Share Statistics, and you can view their website here.  The figures represent data accumulated from January 1, 2008 to September 1, 2008.

  1. 10.12% Comcast Cable
  2. 5.76% Road Runner
  3. 5.31% SBC Internet Services
  4. 4.56% Verizon Internet Services
  5. 2.98% Cox Communications
  6. 2.75% BellSouth.net
  7. 2.61% America Online
  8. 2.13% British Telecommunications
  9. 2.02% Charter Communications
  10. 1.54% Optimum Online
  11. 1.41% Qwest Communications
  12. 1.35% Virgin Media
  13. 1.12% Deutsche Telekom AG
  14. 0.81% Telstra Internet
  15. 0.80% Easynet

Notable companies further down the list are Rogers Communications at 16th place, EarthLink at 24th place, AT&T at 45th place and Hughes Satellite at 47th place.
