Skype 4.0 Beta 2 Is Available

Posted in: Software, VoIP |

One of the best pieces of software for high quality voice calls is Skype.  Skype is used worldwide by several millions of people for making computer to computer and computer to phone calls.

Skype’s newest release is still in Beta and being tested by users around the globe.  The main change to version 4.0 is the user interface.  The messenger box now expands to a large screen, almost a full screen size application.  There are also some smaller changes like an easier way to sort your contacts and alerts are now more prominently displayed.

I personally don’t like the new UI.  I prefer a smaller footprint on my desktop and version 4.0 is now larger than the old one.  Still though, Skype is the best for making voice and video calls on the web today.  To download the stable version 3.8 or to try the recently released Beta version click here to go to Skype’s website.

Is Ooma The Vonage Killer?

Posted in: VoIP |

Ooma the “VoIP in a box” solution is coming on strong.  Initially released at the end of 2007, Ooma’s Hub has been substantially reduced in price in the last few months. Ooma

Ooma provides its customers with free lifetime calls to anywhere in the U.S. for a one-time fee of $249.99, which includes the necessary hardware needed.  The sound quality is crisp and clear using peer-to-peer VoIP technology.

There are many features with this cool device listed below.

  • Caller ID and call waiting.
  • The option to keep your same phone number. (extra charge)
  • Unlimited calling to any phone number in the U.S.
  • Voicemail answering machine.
  • Enhanced 911 service.
  • Low cost International rates

The Ooma Hub hooks up directly to a router, so there is no computer needed.  Ooma also offers you a 30 day money back guarantee if you are not satisfied with the device.

Ooma has a fantastic product here.  Once this item gets more widely known, I think it has a definite chance of putting a lot of pressure on Vonage, which charges a monthly fee.
