Iphone 3G for $99?

Posted in: Cellphones |

During December 08, AT&T offered the iPhone 3Gs with 8 gigabyte for $99. It was refurbished, but came with a full 90 days(or more) warranty. This may open up a whole new market for refurbished smartphones. As the most consumers rush to buy the latest technology, other are returning them because of the complexity. Therefore, companies like AT&T find themselves with a huge supply of “Open box” returns that they have to get rid of.

Although cells phones are becoming more and more of a necessary accessory, many people find the new smartphones with all the “Bells and whistles” very complicated. Cell phones have also become somewhat of an impulse buy which may lead to buyer’s remorse, change of heart or frustration with the smartphone.

Touchscreens are a big concern. Many people are used to entering text with actual keys and not used to typing on a tiny touchscreen. As more features are added and smartphones become more complex, we may find that more people return them which will explode the used or refurbished market.

On January 1, 2009, the price for a refurbished iPhone 3G with 8 gigs was changed  to $149 on the on AT&T’s site, and $249 for the 16GB model Iphone 3G. These will probably go fast because  with the slow economy, many buyers are willing to take a chance on a quality refurb to save a few bucks.

Besides the Iphone 3G, AT&T also sells other refurbished cell phones, such as the Palm Centro, BlackBerry Pearl and Curve. AT&T defines a refurbished phone as “ a previously owned device that is unused or lightly used and was returned within the 30-day trial period and is independently tested for quality and has the latest software loaded.” Phones may have minor scratched which might upset the consumer that must have a totally scratch free phone. Other than that, the phones are pretty much in perfect shape.

If you do decide to buy a refurbished phone, be sure to check the warranty.  All carriers have different plans and options when it comes to refurbished phones.  AT&T seems to have the most options at this point.

Next time you are in the market for a new cellphone (Iphone 3G, Blackberry Pearl or Blackberry Curve, etc), check the major carrier’s websites for the latest deals which in most cases can be up to 60% off the retail pricing.  You may even get lucky and find an Iphone 3G for under $100!
